The Great Migration

The Great Migration is an extraordinary annual event where over 1.5 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, make an incredible journey across the Serengeti-Mara in Tanzania and Kenya. This massive movement is driven by seasonal changes, where the dry season begins in one area and the rainy season begins in another, and the animals instinctively follow this cycle to survive.

This migration follows a circular route and spans nearly 2000 km. This phenomenon typically starts between January and March in the southern Serengeti, where calving season occurs. By April/May, when the dry season starts, massive herds of animals begin to move towards the northwest. From June to July and August to October, the herds must cross the Grumeti River and the Mara River to move into Kenya. This is often the most dramatic stage of the migration, with stampedes, strong currents, and predator attacks. Finally, from November to December, the rainy season begins, and the herds begin to move back towards the Serengeti.

The Importance of the Great Migration

The Great Migration plays a pivotal role in maintaining the balance of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem by driving nutrient cycles, supporting large populations of predators and scavengers, and keeping the grasslands healthy through grazing habits.
