Moela

The Zebra Migration of Botswana

The Zebra Migration in Botswana is one of the most remarkable migration events in Africa. Each year, thousands of zebras travel a round-trip journey of over 500 kilometers between the Okavango Delta and the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. Driven primarily by seasonal rains and the availability of fresh grazing and breeding grounds, this migration is the longest terrestrial wildlife movement in Africa. The zebras typically begin their southward trek around November, heading toward the nutrient-rich grasses of the Makgadikgadi region, and return north around March/April as the pans dry up. This migration not only plays a crucial ecological role in shaping vegetation patterns and supporting predator-prey dynamics, but also highlights the importance of protected corridors and cross-boundary conservation efforts in Botswana’s vast wilderness.
