Africam Partners with Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre for Cheetah Births Camera

This year, Africam partnered with the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC) and Explore.org to bring you an exciting camera, offering a rare opportunity to hopefully witness the incredible birth of cheetah cubs.

The Beginnings of Motherhood

One of the cheetahs we were closely monitoring on the Africams was a 9-year-old female named Tammy – a potential first-time mother whose journey captivated our community. After months of anticipation, the moment finally arrived on the morning of the 30th of April 2025, when Tammy gave birth to four beautiful, healthy cubs. Since then, Tammy and her little ones have been an inseparable family unit, with their bond growing stronger with each passing week.

For the past few months, Tammy and her cubs have been thriving within the safety of a maternity boma. This space has provided Tammy with a secure environment to nurture her young and has allowed the cubs to gain strength and confidence under her watchful eye. Now, as they continue to grow, it’s time for them to take the next step in their journey.

A New Chapter for Tammy and Her Cubs

After thorough health checks and vaccinations, Tammy and her cubs will be relocated into a larger enclosure, designed to support their continued development. To minimize stress, HESC aims to conduct the relocation process with as little human intervention as possible. Fortunately, their facility is designed to allow for this smooth transition – by simply closing a few gates and opening Tammy’s current camp, this will allow Tammy and her cubs to move at their own pace into the new space. In their new space, the cubs will have more room to run, play, and exercise, thus helping them build strength and coordination.

With cheetah populations under pressure due to habitat loss and a shrinking gene pool, every successful birth is a small step towards a brighter future. The hope is that Tammy’s cubs will one day become part of a growing wild population, helping to strengthen genetic diversity and secure a future for cheetahs across Africa.

We’re incredibly proud of Tammy and everything she’s achieved so far. As she and her cubs embark on this next chapter, we’ll be cheering them on every step of the way. We wish Tammy and her cubs all the best for the future!

If you would like to support HESC further, you can now purchase Tammy and Cubs Merchandise from the Africam shop. You’ll see that we have two shops – one for South African purchases and one for International purchases. This will allow you to order and receive your merch as seamlessly as possible, no matter where you are in the world.

All proceeds from this merchandise will be donated to the cheetah conservation initiative at HESC. You can keep an eye on Tammy and her cubs’ further progress on HESC’s website and social media.
