Congratulations to this Month’s Winner!

February’s Photo Competition invited the Africam community to capture the raw, unscripted moments that define life in the wild. From subtle exchanges to powerful encounters, the theme “Wild Interactions” encouraged wildlife enthusiasts to showcase connection, behaviour, and relationship in nature. We’re delighted to announce that BowieWild is the winner of our February Photo Competition with her striking image titled Mom Brings Her Cubs to the Local Wateringhole taken at Lentorre.

Why This Photo Stood Out

This powerful photograph beautifully depicts a mother cheetah guiding her cubs to drink – a moment of care, teaching, and survival under the cover of night. The image instantly resonated with voters and perfectly embodies the spirit of Wild Interactions.

At its heart, this image captures one of the most important interactions in the wild: the bond between a mother and her young. The protective posture of the adult cheetah, the cubs pressed closely together, and their shared focus on the water create a compelling narrative of trust and guidance. It’s a fleeting moment – a lesson in survival at the water’s edge.

Waterholes are natural gathering points – places of risk, relief, and relationship. In this image, we witness more than just animals drinking; we see a mother fulfilling her role, guiding her cubs through the rhythms of the wild. It’s these authentic, unscripted interactions that make Africam moments so special.

From a technical perspective, the photograph is equally impressive. The low-light setting adds atmosphere and drama, while the sharp focus ensures every detail – from the cheetahs’ intense eyes to their reflections mirrored in the still water – is crystal clear. The composition draws the viewer directly into the scene, with the line of drinking cats creating balance and symmetry. The reflections double the impact, enhancing both the visual strength and emotional weight of the moment.

It’s intimate, beautifully timed, and perfectly on theme.
