Congratulations to this Months Winner!
We’re halfway through the year for Africam’s Virtual Wildlife Photo Competition, and July’s entries did not disappoint. July’s theme of “Close Ups” brought us up close and personal with Africa’s most iconic wildlife. It was a close (see what we did there?) call between several entries, but we are thrilled to announce that the winner of July’s Photo Competition is Sue Conver, who captured these comically cuddly ellies at ol Donyo.
Why This Photo Stood Out
This photo, titled “I’ve Got Your Back,” is a powerful close-up and is a beautiful testament to the emotional depth and social bonds of elephants. The image draws the viewer in with its tight framing, centering on the elephant’s expressive eyes and the gentle curl of its trunk draped protectively over the back of a friend. Every wrinkle and texture of their skin is captured in stunning detail, emphasizing the raw reality of their connection. What elevates this photo is not just its technical excellence, but the emotion it conveys – trust, comfort, and solidarity. In a world where wildlife photography often focuses on grandeur or danger, this image stands out for its quiet strength and vulnerability. It’s a moment of stillness and support between two sentient beings, perfectly aligned with the theme Close Ups, and a gentle reminder that even the largest creatures often have soft, empathetic sides.
