Welcome to Camelthorn

On the edge of Botswana’s Makgadikgadi National Park, Camelthorn Farmstead and Animal Survival International (ASI) have created a vital refuge for wildlife in the face of worsening drought. In 2024, Botswana endured its driest wet season in 40 years, leaving water sources dry and animals in crisis. In response, the couple behind Camelthorn began pumping water from their private boreholes into the dry Boteti River. ASI joined their efforts, installing a solar-powered pump, seven solar panels, and extended piping to deliver nearly 16,000 gallons (60,000 liters) of water daily. This waterhole now draws thousands of migrating zebras from the Okavango Delta each year, offering an incredible view of one of southern Africa’s great wildlife events.
