We’re excited to announce the winning image of December’s photo competition, themed “The Best of the Best from Africam.” With subscribers submitting their standout moments from throughout the year, the competition was fierce, and selecting a winner was no easy task. But one photograph rose above the rest – “While I Drink, I Watch You,” captured by Wino at Lentorre. This compelling image perfectly reflects the very best of Africam, showcasing a powerful moment of awareness and presence in the wild. Here’s why it stood out as December’s winning shot.

Why This Photo Stood Out

From a technical perspective, this photograph excels on multiple levels. The low shooting angle places the viewer at eye level with the subject, immediately creating intimacy and tension, while the sharp focus on the caracal’s piercing eyes ensures they become the unmistakable focal point. Despite the challenging low-light conditions, the exposure is well controlled, preserving fine detail in the fur without blowing out highlights or losing the subject to shadow. The shallow depth of field effectively separates the animal from the background, keeping distractions to a minimum, and the reflection in the water adds symmetry and visual interest without overpowering the main subject.
