About the organization
Welcome to Birdlife South Africa
Kamfers Dam is a permanent wetland situated just a short drive from the historic diamond mining town of Kimberley. On average, around 20,000 birds can be observed at the dam, but in certain years, this figure may rise to over 50,000. The dam attracts lesser flamingos because of the abundant algae, which serves as their preferred food source. In partnership with birding experts, the mining company Ekapa thoughtfully built an S-shaped artificial island in the middle of the dam. This initiative allowed the birds to thrive, making history as the first lesser flamingos to successfully breed in South Africa.
